Learn herbal medicine from the source

This November, the BIPOC Herbalism Community invites you to the motherland for a hands-on, Indigenous African Medicine experience. You'll spend seven days on an indigenous organic herb farm, located in the Akwapim mountain range of Eastern Ghana, learning, harvesting, and making medicine in the place where it all begins.

This is the follow-up to our virtual Intro to African Medicine course, offering you the chance to continue learning Indigenous African medicine firsthand.

Over seven days, you’ll move beyond theory by harvesting, preparing, and applying traditional African remedies right where the plants grow. You’ll touch the roots, crush the leaves, and stir the medicine yourself, guided by teachers who carry this knowledge through lived experience.

Every lesson happens on the land, in the forest, or around the fire. You won’t just learn about the medicine—you’ll make it.

What to expect?

  • Herbal Harvests
Each day includes a guided harvest from cultivated and wild African plants on the herbal farm and nearby forest. Learn how to identify and gather the local herbs with respect and intention.

  • Indigenous Medicine Making
Prepare 2–3 herbal remedies daily, including teas, tinctures, salves, creams, steams, washes, or poultices. Learn a variety of traditional West African herbal remedies led by master herbalist Togbe Dzatafia.

  • Spiritual Connection to the Plants
Learn the spiritual aspects of African herbalism, including rituals like bush baths, herbal steams, and cleansing practices rooted in ancestral tradition.

  • Hands-On Learning
This is a fully hands-on course. You’ll be involved in every step of the medicine-making process—from harvesting the plants to preparing and applying the remedies.

  • Farm-To-Table Traditional African Cuisine
Enjoy three nourishing meals each day, featuring home-cooked traditional African dishes that keep you grounded, energized, and connected to the land.

  • Rustic African Village Stays
Stay in authentic traditional huts (double occupancy), or bring your own tent if you prefer to camp closer to the earth.

In addition to your daily hands-on herbal work, the farm offers opportunities to:

  • Take part in plant medicine practices and spiritual herbal baths

  • Enjoy farm-to-table meals made fresh each day

  • Camp under the stars or stay in traditional village huts

  • Gather for bonfires, relax during forest hikes, and explore meditation or yoga

togbe dzatafia

Traditional Herbalist | Spiritual Healer | Royal Linguist

Togbe Dzatafia is a Traditional Herbal Medicine Practitioner and royal linguist from Ghana’s Volta Region. With nearly a decade of experience, he’s helped people heal from chronic illness and spiritual imbalances using ancestral detox protocols, herbal remedies, and sacred practices passed down through his lineage.

To preserve and share this knowledge, Togbe established Nananomkrom—an organic herbal farm near Adukrom in the Akwapim mountain range. Surrounded by lush forest and rooted in tradition, the farm offers students a rare chance to reconnect with the land, learn directly from the plants, and experience traditional West African medicine in its natural environment.

“"Africa is not just the birthplace of humanity—it is the root of herbal medicine, where the first healers listened to the plants and the land remembered how to heal."”
