Learn herbal medicine from the source

This December, the BIPOC Herbalism Community invites you to the motherland for a hands-on, Indigenous African Medicine experience. You'll spend seven days on an African Safari Game Park, located in the lush woodlands of northern Zambia, learning, harvesting, and making medicine in the place where it all begins.

This is the follow-up to our virtual Intro to African Medicine Course, offering you the chance to continue learning Indigenous African medicine firsthand.

Over seven days, you’ll move beyond theory by harvesting, preparing, and applying traditional African remedies right where the plants grow. You’ll touch the roots, crush the leaves, and stir the medicine yourself, guided by teachers who carry this knowledge through lived experience.

Every lesson happens on the land, in the forest, or around the fire. You won’t just learn about the medicine—you’ll make it.

What to expect?

  • Indigenous Medicine Making
Prepare 3–5 herbal remedies daily, learning traditional Zambian medicine preparation methods with guidance from local indigenous healers.

  • Safari Game Drives
Travel through the Miombo woodland ecosystem on safari game drives while observing wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, warthogs, monkeys, and over fifteen species of antelope.

  • Herbal Bush Walks
Join guided bush walks to identify African medicinal plants growing in their natural habitats throughout the Miombo woodland ecosystem.

  • Hands-On Learning
Take part in every stage of the medicine-making process, from harvesting plants to grinding, mixing, and preparing traditional remedies.

  • Indigenous Farming Methods
Learn about traditional farming techniques used by local communities and how crops and medicinal plants are cultivated using time-honored practices.

  • Traditional Zambian Cooking
Learn how traditional Zambian meals are prepared using local ingredients and time-honored cooking practices.

  • Cultural Village Visits
Visit nearby villages to learn about local Zambian culture and everyday life within the surrounding communities.

Located in the Miombo Woodlands: Nsobe African Safari Game Park

The course takes place at Nsobe African Safari Game Park, located in the Miombo woodlands of northern Zambia. This landscape of open woodland, grassy plains, and freshwater lakes provides a rich environment for both wildlife and medicinal plants.

The park overlooks a beautiful lake and is home to giraffes, zebras, warthogs, monkeys, and more than fifteen species of antelope, including the rare Sitatunga, Black Lechwe, and Sable.

In addition to your daily hands-on herbal work, the park offers opportunities to:

  • Take part in traditional herbal and spiritual plant medicine practices

  • Enjoy farm-to-table meals made fresh each day

  • Enjoy rustic stays in traditional Bush Chalets

  • Observe wildlife such as giraffes, zebras, warthogs, antelope, and over 300 species of birds.

  • Experience the rhythm of the land, its people, and the medicine it carries.
